Fonds consists of personal and business records created or accumulated by Conn Smythe as well as records relating to Smythe's involvement with Ontario Society for Crippled Children and the Ontario Community Centre for the Deaf. Personal records include legal agreements, correspondence from military, business, and personal acquaintances, personal financial records, insurance contracts, passports, family historical material, and notebooks, including Smythe's Junior O.H.A. Hockey record notebook. Fonds also includes records arising from Smythe's business activities. These include correspondence and legal records relating to the management of the Caledon properties and the sand business; financial records and correspondence relating to the Roseland Homes Ltd. project; and income tax case records. Fonds includes records relating to Smythe's involvement in hockey. These records relate to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the establishment and history of Maple Leaf Gardens, the establishment and history of the Hockey Hall of Fame, the National Hockey League and the Player's Association. Other hockey records include records relating to Smythe's confrontation with Ontario Attorney-General Roy McMurtry over hockey violence, and early team autographs. Also included are records relating to Smythe's horse-breeding activities, including correspondence, financial records, and breeding, racing, and betting records. Fonds also includes records arising from Smythe's work with the Ontario Society for Crippled Children and the Ontario Community Centre for the Deaf. Records relating to the Ontario Society for Crippled Children include correspondence, financial records, minutes and proceedings of Directors meetings, Easter Seal campaign material, photographs, promotional material, architectural drawings, and records relating to the Variety Club's Variety Village. Records relating to the Ontario Community Centre for the Deaf include correspondence with government officials, politicians, and business leaders, financial statements, minutes of the Advisory Committee, construction management progress reports, and clippings related to the Centre. Fonds also includes publications, such as horse racing programmes, Maple Leaf Gardens programmes, as well as clippings and scrapbooks. Fonds also contains photographs of personal, professional, and charitable activities, as well as some objects.

Conn Smythe was born on February 1, 1895, in Toronto to Albert Smythe, an Irish Protestant from County Antrim who immigrated to Canada in 1889, and Mary Adelaide Constantine, an English woman. He was educated at Jarvis Collegiate Institute, Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto. Smythe served in the Engineering Department of the City of Toronto, with Canadian National Railways, and also with York Township.
